not...quite...there...yet

i just googled Maya Angelou because i was wondering if she is a Christian (i saw a disturbing video of Oprah Winfrey this weekend, and i am bothered now that i ever watched her - even though it's been awhile) and here is what Maya Angelou is quoted as saying, it's pretty true...

I'm grateful to be a practicing Christian. I'm always amazed when people say, "I'm a Christian." I think, "Already?" It's an ongoing process. You know, you keep trying. And blowing it and trying and blowing it ...

at any rate, i think i like Maya enough to read some of her stuff. anyone have any suggestions?

Hm. I have all of Maya's autobiographies. Five, I think. I'll happily send them to you. Her statement is crap. You don't have to keep TRYING to be a Christian. Read a bible, woman! "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you WILL BE SAVED. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Romans 10:9-10. That doesn't say ANYTHING about trying and trying, now does it?

i think she is talking about the sanctification and not the justification. hmmm. yeah. you're right. it is crap.

see, that is why i was wondering if she IS a christian. Lord knows OW is not!!

okay, i thought about it some more and i think she is just saying "i don't feel worthy of calling myself a christian because i am still so not like Christ..."

not sure she (or i) should be trying so hard, but i think that is what struck a cord with me :)

Ok, I'm willing to concede that I didn't hear the conversation and don't know the full context. God will deal with us individually and it's not my job to decide who is "in." OW---I quit watching her several years ago, tired of her mamby-pamby attempts to be ALL religions. God knows her heart, and I pray that it is His, but it seems to me that she is running a different race than the one I read about in my bible.

about oprah - that is what was disturbing to me...i finally saw a clip of her dissing the Lord on national tv, talking about the many ways and paths to God, and really getting seriously angry with a BOLD lady in the audience who was speaking the Truth.

i don't watch her already, but now i will start speaking up about her and the dangerous stuff she spews.

This is my mom's response to Oprah:

"But if even we, or and angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed." Galatians 1:8

There is ONE WAY to heaven, one way to God. That is through the death and resurrection of Jesus, and all we have to do is BELIEVE and accept His gift of the forgiveness of sins.

Poor Oprah.

I am so glad you two have brought this up...I have still been watching OW on the few days I am home - mostly for the fashion/decorating shows. I get her daily email updates of what is one this week. Check out the topic for tomorrow : THE SECRET. It is some new age guru who can help you find your inner whatever. I am sick that millions of OW worshipers are going to be exposed to this big lie. I am getting mad just thinking about it. O.K. girls - I followed the spending fast and now I'm going for the Oprah boycott!!

Whoo-hoo! An Oprah Boycott! You know, years ago I heard her talking about how she felt during that cow trial she was in. She said, "Right at that moment I wanted nothing else but Jesus, do you know what I mean? Je-sus." And then she got this scared look on her face and changed the topic. The problem with her kind of fame is that your audience can reject you so quickly...I think that she has fallen prey to that need for acceptance and it has warped her.

yes, i agree that prayer for her to come back to the Lord is the right thing, i believe she once knew Him also...

weird. i have no idea how "pray for Oprah" got added to my prayer list this week, but there she is.
