mad, mad men

i had to look up and see how many times i have posted on 'mad men' since i started blogging.

only 3 times. none of the times actually have talked about the show! that is craziness. we must discsuss.

mad men is my life. well, not exactly, but almost. my OLD life, that is. just as mad men is the life of almost every person who has ever worked in advertising, i would bet.

the people in mad men are not that emotionally balanced. most of them confuse work with their 'real lives' as one of the characters eloquently pointed out in last night's finale. i loved that somebody admitted that on national tv.

there is something about being in advertising. i've seen it way too many times to think it's coincidence. but really, some kind of virus exists that convinces you that you are somehow different than everybody else, that no one (often not your wife or husband) could ever possibly understand, so you are better off just working and pretending other parts of your life are not that important.

i'm telling you people, this hits home. which is why i was super disturbed and yet thrilled to see that Don Draper (messed up main character) decided to marry his secretary, which seems to solve a lot of his problems all at once. i was actually quite relieved about the predictability of don's decision, and yet it shocked me for its' stupidity. not to mention the poor girl, who is so awe-struck that her boss asked for her hand, that she has NO CLUE what she has just said 'yes' to.

i love/hate that show, yes i do. but i still have hope for Don, and all the rest of the people caught in the web. someday, someday, they will get out of it and look back with amazement at what they had allowed their lives to become. or maybe, that was just me.

you are going to laugh, but last night was the first night i have ever had the chance to tune in to watch. ever. i happened to watch the season finale, and i do see the appeal, especially for ad people. i liked the spunky girl copywriter, of course :)

maybe this winter mad men re-runs can be my "show."

I haven't watched it yet, but I want to. We don't have cable, so I'm going to get the videos through Netflix.

Have you seen this? http://youtu.be/YgvKCfZqxrQ Sesame Street always spoofs the cool shows. :)

Great post, by the way. I love that you're speaking from the other side of this realization. It offers hope that each of us can shake the mindset hurting us.

oh, you guys would LOVE it, i think... i have yet to watch all the seasons, but i am going to catch up on the one i missed.

i'm sure other professions have some of the same idiosyncrasies, but this one is what i know, and done so well. it captures all the highs, and the unfortunate lows.

Carey - It should be a law that anyone who has put in 3+ years at an agency watch Mad Men. Simply put, it's the best TV show EVER. For so many reasons other than the ABSOLUTE accuracy of day to day existence at an agency. Kinda funny that it hasn't changed much in 40+ years.

Bob - I agree with you about Ken's quote last night about not confusing his personal life with his work life. Every single client I have is going to fire me some day...

My fave part of last night? Roger not knowing Megan's last name so he had no idea who Don was engaged to. They have about 14 employees left in that place and Roger STILL can't bother to know last names. Perfect.

Roger is so great! so awful you almost cannot define him! my fave part of last night was when Peggy and Joan had their little 'smoke' break and chatted about the big announcement. CLASSIC.

i was just relieved that something really bad did not happen. i was thinking it might.

Do you think that next season will have some angst between the owners and the non-owners?

Maybe Joan, Peggy and Ken will become a more close knit group as they realize THEY are the ones holding the agency together while the owners (with the exception of Pete) are doing nothing to help get SCDP out of their little financial conundrum.

I love how the alliances form, just like they do in real life. it kind of validates all the crap we have all put up with all these years :)

i'm sure peggy is going to get some ideas about how to do better for herself, ONE of these days :)
